Rag-a-Jack Mat Workshop with Joan Foster

The rag-a-jack (also known as poked or prodded) mat is a shaggy mat made with strips of material 1/2" wide by 3" long on a burlap backing. It was traditionally used in Newfoundland as a door mat to wipe muddied or snowy boots.

It can be hooked using a mat hook or poked using a poker. In this 2 day (12 hour) workshop the student will learn to put the pattern on burlap, what types of material to use, how to cut the material and the techniques for both hooking and poking and how to finish the mat. Students can purchase the backing (30x38) with the border completed from the instructor then choose and put the design on in class or they can bring their own backing. Burlap cost $25 linen $40.

It is recommended to use either heavy weight wool fabric or fleece material such as old jogging pants and sweatshirts. Students should bring a dark color for the border and five coordinating colors for the center. The instructor will provide additional information prior to the workshop.
