Concert in the Harbour with Ian Foster

    8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

$15 at the door, concert begins at 8 pm.

*Ian will be releasing his new CD The Great Wave*

Ian Foster is familiar with the cycle of a song. Since 2006, the Newfoundland-based songwriter has been writing, recording and touring his work around Canada and Europe. His latest release, The Evening Light, showcases songs inspired by the road, and by an examination of home that can only be made from the distance of travel.

His music combines many of the classic elements of folk songwriting and storytelling with newer approaches to the genre. His albums contain a mix of traditional instruments (banjo, upright bass, accordion, violin and cello all appear on his newest release) and modern instruments and effects. He regularly plays both electric and acoustic live, making tasteful use of looping and delay effects to create a bigger sound than one would expect from a solo player.

A road warrior, Ian spends about half of every year playing shows, festivals, and conferences abroad, and regular shows all year long in his home province. His music has been played on radio internationally, from Newfoundland to the Netherlands. He has been nominated for multiple MusicNL (Newfoundland) and ECMA (East Coast Music Awards) over the last few years (including SOCAN Songwriter of the Year), and has been a finalist in the ISC (International Songwriting Competition), based out of Nashville, TN. He also has numerous co-writing credits, including one with the legendary folk songwriter Ron Hynes.

One can expect a dynamic live show, with regular stories interspersed throughout a set, adding a level of insight into the songs that can only come from an "in the flesh" performance.

Popular to fans and critics alike, Ian's music resonates. Glenn Meisner, long time producer at CBC Radio in Halifax has this to say: Ian is special There are those special things about he and his music that you cannot quite put your finger on " hard to express qualities that allow him to creep into your consciousness and superimpose his imagination on yours rare qualities that separate the wheat from the chaff in this business." Tony Ploughman, chief music purchaser at Fred's Records in St. John's, notes, "For those who appreciate, embrace and applaud artistic quality, commitment, drive, and the fruits of a laborious creative process, Ian Foster is reason to take notice."

Concert in the Harbour with The Ennis Sisters

    8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

You won't want to miss this evening of wonderful music.

    8 pm. $20

The lyrics by Maureen Ennis from the Song "John William", speak of the lineage into which she and her sister, Karen, were born. Along with their sister, Teresa, the girls learned to sing around the time most people learn how to walk.

And while that may not be a unique thing for many people from Newfoundland and Labrador, the level of success they have attained since then, certainly is.

With a Juno award, a SOCAN award, multiple ECMA and Music NL awards and nominations, Maureen and Karen have performed in Australia, The Middle East, Europe, America and Canada, accumulating 3 gold records along the way and sharing the stage with such widely respected artists as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Mary Black, Jann Arden and the Chieftains.

Having released 6 CD's as the Ennis Sisters, ENNIS are poised to release their follow-up to the award winning album, "Lessons Learned".

Three days- $300 One day only $125

    work. Bring your lunch.

Gerald (Gerry) Leopold Squires, CM (born November 17, 1937) is an artist from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Perhaps best known for painting dramatic landscapes in acrylic and oil, Squires has also produced major work in sculpture, lithography, and stained glass. He is also an accomplished portraitist. Much of his work draws its inspiration from the landscape and culture of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Born in Change Islands, Newfoundland, Gerald Squires moved with his family to Toronto, Ontario at the age of twelve. In Toronto he attended Danforth Technical School, where his natural artistic talent was encouraged. He later took night classes at the Ontario College of Art & Design. Upon graduating from Danforth, Squires supported his art practice by apprenticing as a stained glass artist, and later worked as an editorial artist with the Toronto Telegram for several years. He exhibited his work in Toronto in solo shows such as St. Francis of Assisi and Related Subjects, The Canticles of St. John of the Cross, and The Wanderer Series. Squires was also a founding member of the Robert McLaughlin Art Gallery in Oshawa, Ontario.

In 1969 Squires quit his job at the Telegram and returned to Newfoundland. In 1971 he settled in an abandoned lighthouse in Ferryland, where he lived with his wife and two daughters. In Ferryland, Squires was an artist in residence and teacher for Memorial University of Newfoundland, and established a steel sculpture studio, Headland Studios, with fellow artist Stewart Montgomerie. Work from this period includes Studies in Steel, Portraits, and The Ferryland Downs Series.

Squires has lived and worked in Holyrood, Newfoundland since 1983. In the early 1980s he created several major works for Mary Queen of the World Church, a process chronicled in the film The Newfoundland Passion by Arnold Bennett. In 1984 he received the Ted Drover Award for Achievement in the Visual Arts from the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council. He was made a member of the Order of Canada in 1999, and in 2003 received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal. He was made a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.1

Squires continues to produce paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures, and exhibits widely. Notable recent shows include Gerald Squires: Journey, a 40-year retrospective at the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador (1998), and Interior Light at the Emma Butler Gallery (2005).

Environmental Art: Dry Stonewall Building with Dan Snow

    10:00 a.m. to July 31st, 4:00 a.m.
    Fee: $550.00

    ENVIRONMENTAL ART WORKSHOP

The purpose of the workshop is to discover terrestrial habitats, artifacts, microcosms and vistas that excite curiosity and wonder about a place, identify existing order and disorder for the purpose of exploring ways art can be an evolutionary partner with the environment, and to seek out conditions conducive to the development of creative interrelationships with the natural world. The workshop will take a hands-on approach to making art that springs from, and is absorbed by, its surroundings.

Initially, participants will employ writing and sketching to record their impressions of the English Harbour environs. Focused attention will lead to the assessment of possibilities for action on the land. The second day will be for working in small scale, crafting three-dimensional models. Participants will develop a feel for materials and their potential for form making. The last three days of the workshop will be devoted to the construction of an environmental art piece. Stone will be the principal element with the possible introduction of other natural materials. Instruction in building with loose stone will include identifying each stone for its best use, applying four basic principles for strong construction, and practicing safe shifting and lifting methods.
