Our Calendar of Events

EHAC offers workshops and concerts each season, creating opportunities for artistic expression and skill development. Based on a curated mix of genres and popularity, and mindful of our superb acoustics, up and coming musicians are invited to perform in our extraordinary space. Workshops are offered whenever teaching professionals visit the Bight and express interest in sharing their craft. Or perhaps an artist in residence will offer a class. Every season is different. Have a look at this season's offerings.

    Fee: $20.00

    8pm

    $20 Tickets available at:

    London Above
    (Limited tickets at the door)

London Above formed in early 2013. The alternative rock band consists of Elliott Butt (bass/guitar/vocals), Chris Morrison (guitar/vocals/keyboards), and Harry Parsons (drums). The band has been playing in St. John's to increasingly well-attended shows over the past several years. Chris and Elliott are both graduates of Memorial University's School of Music where they met. Before London Above, Elliott fronted St. John's band Shorthanded, notably opening for Silverstein, Ten Second Epic and Protest the Hero. Chris fronted Gander's Assembled By Judy, opening the 2009 ECMAs. Harry attended the Musician's Institute in Los Angeles, California for drums and has played in numerous bands around St. John's, opening for acts including Wintersleep and Metz. Recently, Harry was voted runner-up best drummer in St. John's according to the Overcast reader's poll. Harry has also taken part in Canadian Music Week, playing shows around Southern Ontario. Individually, each member has distinct and often contrasting influences but they have found a way to amalgamate their styles into an exciting, dynamic sound. London Above's live show captures the complexities, the musicianship and the energy of its recordings and offers a truly entertaining experience.

Wanda Crocker, Christina Smith, Gerry Strong, Jean Hewson and Rick West are all long-time contributors to the Newfoundland traditional music scene. They have played with each other in sessions and in various combinations on stage over the years without unfortunate incident. So, why not answer Newfoundland's desperate need for another traditional band and find fame and fortune before geezerhood takes over entirely? "What odds, may as well", they thought and hatched WHAT ODDS in the (very early) spring of 2013. The rest is unwritten history.

    Fee: $20.00

    8pm

    $20 Tickets available at:

    Monto.
(Limited tickets available at the door.)

"Monto, hailing from one of the most easterly points in North America, is a rock band in the truest sense. The band, formed in 2011, has left audiences from their hometown of Bonavista totally enthralled by serving them something they rarely get to hear much of any more - music steeped in the country, folk, blues and soul roots of great rock 'n roll. These four high school friends - Andrew Smith, Spencer Oldford, Kyle Waye and Alex Crewe - take their early influences and mix them with a creativity and imagination that allows them to make music that is, at once, both authentic and original. That's what happens when a passion for rock's greatest artists crashes headlong into the innocence of youth and the pure joy of discovering how to play rock 'n roll. Wise beyond their 17 years, these four boys take their songwriting very seriously. Soon, others will too."

(Limited tickets available at the door)

It's recitation night in the Harbour! The recitation has a long history in the culture of Newfoundland and Labrador and is experiencing a resurgence after a few quiet years. What's a recitation? Well, poetry would be a bit of a grand word but basically it's a spoken word story which is recited from memory and is usually, but not always, funny.
Hubert Furey, Harry Ingram, Dave Paddon and Dave Penny have been performing together as "From Stage to Stage" for about 5 years and there is a lot of interest in the shows. So come on out for some laughs, maybe a sentimental tear or two and an all round nice evening in a place where recitations have been told for centuries.

2016 EHAC Art Exhibit: Andy Jones and Deb Wickwire

    1:00 p.m. to October 1st, 4:00 p.m.

The Abbie Table---Family Life in the Salt Fishery

Andy Jones has been reported as saying it is: "...Difficult to bend the mainland mind around the importance of that fish to our existence here."

The importance that is, of the salt fish industry to our continued existence as Newfoundland inhabitants. My mother agrees with Andy.
My mother says "unless you are from Jamaica or Barbados you may not be aware of the historical importance of the salt fish to our existence (as Newfoundlanders)."

The "Abbie Table" is a 2011 creative project spearheaded by Newfoundland actor, author, storyteller and comedian, Andy Jones.

Due to public demand, "The Abbie Table" will be available for viewing at the English Harbour Arts Centre in Trinity Bay Newfoundland during the summer of 2016. This wooden table top illustration sets the story of the salt fish industry in its historical place by plainly detailing on its surface the family life and times of Abbie Whiffen who grew up from the 1920s to the 1950s in a Newfoundland cove similar to English Harbour just across Trinity Bay. "While the cod may have gone and overall things gotten easier since then, this courage and creativity remains an important example of how we may persist when things get difficult now and more importantly how we might make things better not by just tapping in to the spirit of our hardy ancestors but my tapping into the details of their lives as well." Andy Jones
Come join us by bending your back and mind around the people and details that have made this table a living legacy for all to enjoy.

Made Fish: A collection of Trinity Bay specimens 2002-2015
When Deb first visited Trinity Bay in 1997 and learned of the moratorium, and the reduced fish stocks, she decided to begin making molds of various fish that were being caught and turn them into stone for a record. You will find a collection of various species, some authentic, some whimsical, swimming the walls of the arts centre.

    The Door You Came In

    8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The Door You Came In isn't quite a play and it isn't quite a concert. It's a musical story- sometimes funny, sometimes tragic, that tells the tales of family, and memory, and war.

A writer visits hisdying mother. He brings a book that he's written twenty-five years ago to read to her. It's about her family. But it's also about the terrible battle - Beaumont Hamel- that sits at the heart of both Newfoundland's and her family's history. So begins The Door You Came In --a two man performance based on David Macfarlane's acclaimed memoir, The Danger Tree.

The songs and the music of The Door You Came In are Douglas Cameron's department. A seasoned, Genie-nominated singer and performer, Cameron plays banjola, mandolin, ukulele, and accordian. His engaging, foot-tapping performance combines popular tunes of the day ("Pack Up Your Troubles." and "If You Were the Only Girl in the World") with original compositions. Macfarlane's narrative weaves seamlessly throughout the music.

The two other finalists were Stan Dragland for Strangers & Others (Pedlar Press, St. John's, NL) and Leslie Vryenhoek for Ledger of the Open Hand (Breakwater Books, St. John's).

The BMO Winterset Award is composed of a partnership between the BMO Financial Group and those involved from the start - ArtsNL and the project's founder, writer Richard Gwyn, OC. The prize awarded to the annual winner is $12,500, while the finalists each receive $3,000. It is one of Atlantic Canada's richest literary prizes.

Duke (Pedlar Press, St. John's, NL) was one of 31 works by Newfoundland and Labrador authors (either native-born or resident) that were submitted by publishers from across the country. Books in any genre, published in 2015 were eligible. The jury consisted of Chris Brookes, Megan Gail Coles, and Randy Street.

The BMO Winterset Award honours the memory of Sandra Fraser Gwyn, St. John's-born social historian, prize-winning author, who did so much to promote a national awareness of the arts of this province. Her husband, journalist and author Richard Gwyn, OC, established the award in 2000. It is named after the historic house on Winter Avenue in St. John's where Sandra grew up.

Traditional Oil-glaze Painting with Kathy Marlene Bailey

    9:00 a.m. to September 14th, 4:00 p.m.
    Fee: $600.00

A four-day painting workshop for beginners and experienced artists.

    Medium: Glaze Oil

    Cost: $600 including materials

Time: 9:30 am to 4:00 pm

Dates: Sunday, September 11th - Wednesday, September 14

If you want to learn the basics of how the old masters painted, how to paint in oils in a very health friendly way, this is the course for you! This 5 day art retreat workshop is a condensed course with master glazer, Kathy Marlene Bailey. She will teach you the basics of Renaissance glazing processes and will fine-tune your skills in: colour perception and mixing, rendering, value perception, brushwork and depth illusion. You will learn valuable skills suitable for any artist, both novice and advanced.

Kathy Marlene Bailey lives in Burlington, Ontario. She graduated from the University of Toronto in Art Education and Sheridan College in Creative Arts and ever since, has been a practicing professional artist. In her first year of university, she had the pivotal experience of learning traditional glaze oil painting. Kathy is one of a handful of artists in Canada who works in this highly specialized field. Although her artistic focus has been exclusively painting for a number of years, Kathy, from about 1994 to 2004, had an extensive career focus as a sculptor, primarily making small, fine, hand-modeled figurative sculptures.

She has participated for many years in commercial galleries, art events, and juried shows, three major exhibitions (one solo), and has won many awards for her painting. Kathy's work is currently being shown at the Christine Parker Gallery in St. John's. Kathy will be in a show there this summer in August.

As a child, Kathy grew up in Toronto with two artist parents, and cottaged in Haliburton County, where from being a tiny girl, she developed a fascination for nature and all its complexities, especially the dancing water. The Renaissance methods of oil painting she learned in university became an ideal medium for painting and exploring this wonder of water. The method has limitless gages to tweak and pull colour, value, contrast and colour quality. She could make transparency, translucency, opacity, light and dark, vivid and quiet colours dance together in rich harmonic melody, dancing to her eyes and soul.

She has completely enjoyed her extensive art teaching experiences where she "passes the baton" while specializing in technical training courses in traditional glaze oil painting, fundamental and advanced colour, as well as creativity skills development.
