Concert in the Harbour with Matthew Byrne

    8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

$20 available online using the link below or at the door if you dare to wait until then.
    Show is at 8 pm.

    http://www.matthewbyrne.eventbrite.ca/

Matthew Byrne was born into a family of Newfoundland music makers and his repertoire is heavily influenced by his unique musical lineage. This tradition thrives on the song the weaving of a great story with a beautiful melody and Matthew's music reminds us how satisfying traditional songs can be when stripped down to these basic elements. His live performance offers tasteful and honest interpretations of folk songs delivered with polished guitar work and powerful vocals. His repertoire transcends time and place with traditional songs from both sides of the Atlantic.
Since bursting on to the trad scene four years ago with his debut recording, Ballads, Matthew has swiftly earned his place as one of the East Coast's most authentic and vital traditional voices. In that time, Matthew's music has traveled well beyond the rugged shores of his homeland. His role as singer and song-finder in The Dardanelles has brought him to many major international festival stages including Winnipeg Folk Festival, Celtic Connections in Glasgow, UK, and The Woodford Folk Festival in Queensland, Australia.
Matthew is currently promoting his second solo offering, Hearts & Heroes, which brilliantly showcases his musical growth as a traditional singer and guitarist, and asserts a new level of musicianship and a skill with interpreting and arranging traditional music. Byrne has once again teamed up with producer and musical partner Billy Sutton to create fresh and original arrangements of lesser-known traditional songs, which Byrne has either inherited from singers within his family or sought out himself. The influence of four years in a powerful and rhythmic trad ensemble is evident in songs like "Bold Nelson" and "McAlpine's Crew", which showcase a thicker band sound and sit beautifully alongside the stark, stripped-down arrangements on the record, which include two original instrumentals.
Hearts & Heroes is available in stores and online.

Traditional Glaze Oil Painting I with Kathy Marlene Bailey

    9:30 a.m. to July 16th, 4:00 a.m.

A five-day painting workshop for beginners and experienced artists.

    Medium: Glaze Oil

    Cost: $600 including materials

Time: 9:30 am to 4:00 pm

    Dates: July 12th July 16, 2015

If you want to learn the basics of how the old masters painted, how to paint in oils in a very health friendly way, this is the course for you! This 5 day art retreat workshop is a condensed course with master glazer, Kathy Marlene Bailey. She will teach you the basics of Renaissance glazing processes and will fine-tune your skills in: colour perception and mixing, rendering, value perception, brushwork and depth illusion. You will learn valuable skills suitable for any artist, both novice and advanced.

Kathy Marlene Bailey lives in Burlington, Ontario. She graduated from the University of Toronto in Art Education and Sheridan College in Creative Arts and ever since, has been a practicing professional artist. In her first year of university, she had the pivotal experience of learning traditional glaze oil painting. Kathy is one of a handful of artists in Canada who works in this highly specialized field. Although her artistic focus has been exclusively painting for a number of years, Kathy, from about 1994 to 2004, had an extensive career focus as a sculptor, primarily making small, fine, hand-modeled figurative sculptures.

She has participated for many years in commercial galleries, art events, and juried shows, three major exhibitions (one solo), and has won many awards for her painting. Kathy's work is currently being shown at the Christine Parker Gallery in St. John's.

As a child, Kathy grew up in Toronto with two artist parents, and cottaged in Haliburton County, where from being a tiny girl, she developed a fascination for nature and all its complexities, especially the dancing water. The Renaissance methods of oil painting she learned in university became an ideal medium for painting and exploring this wonder of water. The method has limitless gages to tweak and pull colour, value, contrast and colour quality. She could make transparency, translucency, opacity, light and dark, vivid and quiet colours dance together in rich harmonic melody, dancing to her eyes and soul.

She has completely enjoyed her extensive art teaching experiences where she "passes the baton" while specializing in technical training courses in traditional glaze oil painting, fundamental and advanced colour, as well as creativity skills development.

Please contact Kathy Marlene Bailey directly for more information, and to register, at her website:

A Concert in the Harbour with What Odds

    8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

    8 pm $20

Wanda Crocker, Gerry Strong, Jean Hewson and Rick West are all long-time contributors to the Newfoundland traditional music scene. They have played with each other in sessions and in various combinations on stage over the years without unfortunate incident. So, why not answer Newfoundland's desperate need for another traditional band and find fame and fortune before geezerhood takes over entirely? "What odds, may as well", they thought and hatched WHAT ODDS in the (very early) spring of 2013. The rest is unwritten history.

Wanda Crocker (fiddle and mandolin) was a member of seminal folk band BARKIN' KETTLE in the 80s, as well as the bands THE PRODIGAL DAUGHTERS and the SUB-SISTERS. With BARKIN' KETTLE, Wanda performed at most of the major Canadian folk festivals including: The Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Vancouver Folk Festival, and the Festival of Friends in Hamilton, Ontario.
Gerry Strong (flute, whistle) is well known for his work with the award-winning bands, TICKLE HARBOUR and A CROWD OF BOLD SHAREMEN, and his recent retirement from Eastern Health has enabled him to refocus his energies on performing, touring and promoting his recent CD, Velvet in the Wind.
For more than thirty years, Jean Hewson (lead vocals and guitar), has brought the music of Newfoundland and Labrador to the world stage. She has toured extensively throughout Canada, the UK and the States, with various artists, including: MAHERS BAHERS, BARKIN' KETTLE and Christina Smith (website). Her work with Smith garnered her two ECMA award nominations for their albums Like Ducks and August Gale (1998 and 2005, respectively).
Rick West (bodhran) played and was executive producer for Snotty Var, nominated for an ECMA in 1998. Since 1999 he has been a member of MAHERS BAHERS, led by accordion-master, Frank Maher. Their album, Mahervelous, received Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for best traditional and best solo-instrumental album (2005).

POSTPONED Concert in the Harbour with Terry Penney

    8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Concert in the Harbour with Terry Penney IS POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE DUE TO ICE!
WE HOPE TO RESCHEDULE SO PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR AN UPDATE

    $20 8:00

Once again Terry Penney will fill the arts centre with songs and stories of long ago times in English Harbour.

Terry has close family connections to English Harbour: his Dad's family was from English Harbourand and our venue was actually the church his family attended. Terry's great Uncle Steve Penney ran a General Store in English Harbour. And Terry has received strong accolades for his song "Shells" which is on his latest album: the main character in the song, a World War I veteran, is from Trinity Bay. This song was chosen as a Folk Song finalist at last year's Kerrville Folk Songwriting Competition in Kerrville Texas.

Terry Penney is a Newfoundland singer/songwriter whose songs are so vivid and image-driven they have been likened to "3-minute movies". He is a world class storyteller and performer with the uncanny ability to "put you there" in his songs and for the past decade he has done just that. Penney is an old soul who has always had a penchant for the past. Consequently, his songs are often set in a by-gone era when little boys dreamed of helping the Lone Ranger and World War veterans still walked the streets as young men.
Not surprising, the first music Penney was drawn to as a child were records from his parents collection: Buddy Holly's Greatest Hits, Elvis, and The American Graffiti Sound Track. These discoveries started a lifelong appreciation for artists from that era. "There's just something about the rawness and honesty of those early recordings that I've always been drawn to and those are elements that I strive for in my own music." From there he gravitated towards artists like Steve Earle and John Prine, and it's with the afore-mentioned that Penney aligns himself stylistically. "All my favorite artists today are mavericks who don't neatly fit into one genre of music."
Terry Penney is a commanding artist with five full-length albums that have garnered numerous awards and honors, including 2012 Music NL Country Artist of the Year. His extensive touring experience includes major events like the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival, the Stan Rogers Folk Festival in Nova Scotia, US tour of Maine and a UK tours in Ireland and England. Penney's fifth album, The Last Guitar, was released on February 14, 2012 to critical acclaim (4 Stars, Maverick Magazine, UK

    fortunateonesnl.eventbrite.ca

Fortunate Ones is a Canadian pop-folk duo made up of singer/guitarist Andrew James O'Brien and singer/pianist/accordion player Catherine Allan, endearing audiences with wide-eyed energy, pragmatic optimism, and an earnest mission for connection.

Andrew and Catherine grew up on opposite sides of the island of Newfoundland: Mount Pearl and Corner Brook respectively. It was in St. John's where the pair met and began to sing together. One night in 2010, Andrew heard Catherine sing harmony with her brother at a private gathering in downtown St John's. He had to sing with her. The next day he got up the nerve, left her a note, she acquiesced, and within 48 hours they were singing together on stage. While it was a road from that evening to the formation of Fortunate Ones in 2013, their beginnings are in keeping with one of the core messages they carry. That sometimes the most important decision you can make is to just say YES.

From a musical family, the Allan home was a constant eclectic flow of instruments, singing and the stereo. Catherine studied classical piano, taught herself guitar in secret, and discovered the accordion by chance when her brother brought one home over Christmas in 2011. Musical exploration was the norm. After moving to St. John's, Catherine's induction to the East Coast music scene was rapid, performing with Andrew, recording and touring extensively with JUNO award-winning songwriter Amelia Curran, and appearing at festivals with Curran and East Coast songwriter Don Brownrigg.

Andrew James O'Brien launched his music career with a well-received solo album Songs for Searchers (2011), nominated for Best Pop Recording at the 2012 East Coast Music Awards. He toured heavily in Canada and the UK, opening for artists such as Sharon Shannon and Paul Brady. Catherine accompanied him. It was on a UK tour that they realized the direction their collaboration was taking. The appreciation shown by UK audiences bolstered the pair's sense of purpose. Their music began to evolve to represent both of their sensibilities, skills and sounds.

Plain and simple, they consider themselves fortunate to pursue their dreams. Their name reflects shared experience with audiences. It is about connecting people of all kinds, to make strangers friends, to elicit feelings of joy, hope, sadness, and contemplation and the spirit that we are all in this together.

Produced by multi-ECMA winner Daniel Ledwell, THE BLISS was recorded at Lake Echo in Nova Scotia during the winter of 2014, and features guest appearances by East Coast favorites Jenn Grant, Don Brownrigg, and Kinley Dowling. The Bliss was released on JUNO award winning songwriter Rose Cousins' record label Old Farm Pony Records on February 10, 2015.
